Today, the New York Times offers a great look a brand-new affordable housing development in South Bronx. Architecture critic Michael Kimmelman talks to Secretary Donovan about Via Verde, a “handsome” structure which, Kimmelman writes, “goes out of its way to be healthy.” According to the Times, Via Verde is a vanguard project that fuses attractive design with sustainability:
“The idea was to spur developers to team with architects in combining the latest green concepts with high-quality architecture for a public-housing project, a “beacon,” as Mr. Donovan put it to me the other day, that would “re-engage design with the issue of affordable housing.”
